The SADC Climate Services Centre provides operational, regional services for monitoring and predicting extremes in climate condition. The Centre develops and disseminates meteorological, environmental and hydro-meteorological products.

The Centre’s products contribute to improved disaster risk management in the region and help to ensure Member States are better prepared for weather and climate disasters, conservation and protection of natural resources.

The Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) is funded by the European Union.

In 1999, SADC established the Regional Vulnerability Assessment Committee (RVAC) with International Cooperating Partners and other stakeholders. This committee has spearheaded critical improvements in vulnerability analysis and food security at both regional and country level.

At Member State level, National Vulnerability Assessment Committees (NVACs) coordinate the annual vulnerability assessment and analysis. NVACs are multi-sectional committees led by relevant government ministries with wide ranging memberships, which includes different government departments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international organisations involved in poverty reduction and socio-economic development. NVACs carry out annual and periodic vulnerability assessments, in addition to special studies on selected topics such as nutrition, climate change and related themes that are critical in vulnerability assessment and analysis.

The Southern African Development Coordinating Conference (SADCC), established on 1 April 1980 was the precursor of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The SADCC was transformed into the SADC on 17 August 1992 in Windhoek, Namibia where the SADC Treaty was adopted, redefining the basis of cooperation among Member States from a loose association into a legally binding arrangement.

The main objectives of SADC are to achieve development, peace and security, and economic growth, to alleviate poverty, enhance the standard and quality of life of the peoples of Southern Africa, and support the socially disadvantaged through regional integration, built on democratic principles and equitable and sustainable development.

UNOSAT is a technology-intensive programme under the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) implemented with the support of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and in partnership with UN and non-UN organizations.

Its Humanitarian Rapid Mapping Service is delivering imagery analysis and satellite solutions to relief and development organizations within and outside the UN system to help make a difference in critical areas such as humanitarian relief, human security, strategic territorial and development planning.

UNOSAT develops solutions keeping in sight the needs of the beneficiaries at the end of the process.

The Sendai Framework Monitor is an online tool that captures self-reported (by member states) progress data against a set of 38 Sendai Framework indicators towards the seven Sendai Framework global targets. The indicators measure progress and determine global trends in the reduction of risk and losses.
