This activity report summarizes activities of Result Area 5, also known as the Africa Disaster Risk Financing (ADRF) Initiative from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.The report provides an overview of the achievements to date and identifies upcoming priorities and challenges.
On 23 April, Tropical Cyclone Kenneth formed north of Madagascar and east of the Aldabra Atoll, north of the Mozambique Channel. Its path is expected to pass over the northern tip of the Comoros islands on 24 April and continue onward to northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania.
On 27 March, the Government confirmed five cases of cholera at Munhava health centre in Beira City, according to the National Director of Medical Assistance, Ussene Isse. The authorities also reported some 2,500 cases of acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) in Beira district.
Flooding in Malawi and Mozambique had affected nearly 843,000 people and caused at least 60 deaths as of 11 March, according to preliminary reports from the respective Governments. In Malawi, nearly 739,800 people had been impacted, according to the Government, with 45 deaths and 577 injuries recorded.
The number of severely food insecure people in Southern Africa rose to an estimated 9.6 million at the start of the lean season (October 2018 to April 2019), due to an increase of 1.1 million people in Malawi.
From 8 – 10 January 2020, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted rapid assessment in 12 resettlement sites across Tete and Zambezia provinces after the heavy rainfall last 30 December 2019 to 05 January 2020. In total, 45 upgraded shelters, 37 emergency shelters and 109 tents were completely destroyed due to the heavy rain.
